I've been filling out a number of candidate questionnaires over the past several weeks.  Tonight, I'm working on the Alameda Labor Council questionnaire, which includes a question about the Employee Free Choice Act, which is evidently the Labor Movement's top legislative priority.  I am somewhat abashed to say that I knew very little about the Act, although I 've been doing some reading on the subject this evening.

I've not had a lot of experience with employers opposing the formation of a union, which is an issue addressed by the Act.  At AC Transit, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) was established long ago, and IBEW, although small in numbers, was also established.  When some of the managers (I was one of them) began the effort to form our own union, the General Manager at the time (Sharon Banks) was supportive.  In fact, Ms. Banks advocated for a greater number of employees to be part of the bargaining unit, although her Chief Labor Attorney argued successfully for some classifications not to be included in AFSCME.

If you are interested in more information about the Employee Free Choice Act, click on the  link above.  You will be directed to an AFL-CIO site, which contains more information than you may have thought existed about the Act.

Happy reading, and Happy Labor Day tomorrow!
